Unfortunately, it’s common for patients to have received incorrect or incomplete information about wisdom teeth. Our focus is to provide you with comprehensive and detailed advice, along with a wide range of options appropriate to your situation.

Wisdom teeth, or third molars as they are also known, emerge within the back corners of your mouth and are usually the last teeth to appear. Unlike the other teeth, which appear earlier in life, wisdom teeth arrive when someone is more mature and considered to be “wiser”, hence their name.

Wisdom teeth typically erupt between the ages of 17 and 25, and if they emerge unobstructed, generally no issues will arise.

Problems with wisdom teeth can stem from a variety of factors.

Wisdom teeth can be problematic due to overcrowding and insufficient space in the mouth for them to erupt. If the space isn’t available, they may come through incorrectly. This can then lead to crowding or tooth impaction, where the tooth becomes partially or completely buried in the gums or jawbone.

If wisdom teeth only partially emerge or become impacted, the following complications can occur:

  • Food and bacteria trapping under gum tissue creating localised gum infections known as pericoronitis
  • Efficient home hygiene becoming almost impossible
  • Problems leading to loss of neighbouring molars if left untreated
  • Decay of wisdom teeth themselves, resulting in severe toothache
  • Impacted teeth pushing against cheeks causing pain

Some of these issues can be managed in the short term by thoroughly flushing and cleaning the problem areas; but often problems will continue until the offending tooth or teeth are removed.

Why Choose Eagleby Dental When You Need Wisdom Teeth Care

Dr Louwen Heng has extensive experience in wisdom teeth and surgical procedures, ensuring that patients receive treatment carefully and conservatively – resulting in shorter healing times and better patient comfort.

With his expertise, he can perform even complicated removals in the chair under local anesthesia at Eagleby Dental. The vast majority of cases can be handled at our practice due to Dr. Heng’s experience with complex procedures. In many practices, it is common for patients to be referred for surgery in hospital to extract wisdom teeth under general anaesthetic, a significantly more expensive option and typically a longer recovery time.

Procedures in the chair range from surgical removal to simple extractions and many of our patients are surprised at how quick and painless it is. We make it fuss-free and you can safely drive or walk home afterwards.

We Are The Patient Comfort Specialists When It Comes To Dealing With Wisdom Teeth

Most patients come to us for wisdom tooth treatment because they’re experiencing pericoronitis (an acute gum infection) that results in swelling, discomfort when eating, and in some cases enough pain to cause sleepless nights or time off from work.

We want to help you feel better as soon as possible and always prepare an appropriate pain management strategy in the lead up to the procedure, during the extraction and then for a comfortable recovery during the healing process.
